Lubica…From Slovakia, to Jamaica, to the world! And to you too ;)

Lubica and Tami Chyn

I’ve known about Jamaican designer Lubica (pronounced Lu-bit-sa) ever since I saw her knitted swimsuits some years ago. My interest peaked when I realized she had gone into dresses and I must say I’m a fan. The dresses were flowy and flattering to any figure and I knew she would be one to watch. Fast forward to Caribbean Fashion Week 2008 and WOW the dresses were cute! They were casual, comfortable yet flirty and very on trend with colours and patterns. Of course I had to reach out to the designer, who’s a graduate of Ryerson University in Toronto Canada where she studied her trade:

i always loved fashion since i was a little girl. My mom always let me choose my outfits and only if i looked absolutely ridiculous would she make me change! but i got a hang of it from quite early age and always tried to come up with something new.. and i always wanted to shock people with what i had on. i just wanted to look different. and i must say sometimes people did look at me funny!!! :-)

everyone always told me that i should do somehting in the fashion industry… and i tried to ingore it.. but it just made sense in the end… and it felt right.. and everything happened so naturaly… its like the universe was trying to tell me that this is the right way to go…
so far so good… i must say that i started making bikinis even before i went to university for it.. and people were always interested in them. even when i was in school and didnt have time to promote myself as much i was getting plenty calls from people and magazines and so on… so i knew i was doing the right thing. Highs ..would be anytime i see someone wearing one of my dresses or bikinis… and also being backstage at CFW watching the models in my designs walk down the runway… my knees are always shaking.. and i always have tears in my eyes… ALWAYS! but especialy this last CFW… i just really liked this last collection and the music at my show was slovakian… and i just didnt want the show to end!! ;-) but i am always so nervous to walk out at the end… i love it.. but hate it at the same time… :-) celebs… i work with a fabulous stylist from toronto Jeannette Linton who styles the hit tv show Kink in my Hair …. i also got and order from the actress Mena Suvari and also couple famous ladies from Slovakia… which i am very excited about!!!

i think because i am doing my line from jamaica i face a few more challenges… as we dont have the wide variety of fabrics and trimmings and so on to chose from… the consistency of work is not always 100%…. smaller market…but i think those are challneges that every designer in the world has to deal with … fashion industry is always changing… it never stops… there is alwyas something bigger and better that you can come up with..!!!! :-)
the future…i just want to focus on the dresses.. day and evening and make some fabulous designs that women will LOVE to wear.. and take it to the world!!!! i am planning to do some shows in europe in the near future… so i will definitely send you some pics from that!….
there are couple locations now where my line can be purchased. Kerry manwomanhome of course…. 18 south ave in Kingston, Jamaica.. and also in the Half Moon shopping plaza in MoBay… and the CFW store in the Pulse complex, 38 Traffalgar Road, Kingston …
Custom pieces are available… directly from me… i can be contacted via email : lubicafashion@yahoo.com

She’s a Slovakian who fell in love with the warmth of Jamaica (of course!) and now lives and trades here. Lubica is a girl of my own heart, DRESSES DRESSES and more DRESSES, definately a designer to watch. She’s one of my faves and I’m pretty much sure she’s about to become one of your’s too as she’s…….wait for it…….giving away a dress!!!! Yes FOS reader’s you know THIS is the ONLY site to get FREE local designer ish and a Lubica creation is on its way to you! You know the drill by now, tell me something you recently learned about by way of FOS and why you’d love to rock a Lubica dress! Ensure you comment with a valid email address, it will be used to contact you if you’re selected.

  1. ok soo first off what have i learned by way of FOS… COLOURED JEANS R BAAAACK!!! this just gives me a right to resurrect my sky blue jeans (Lord i hope they fit me).
Furthermore tho i adore red shoes with animal prints i was reassured that i was not crazy for wearing my green shoes with them lol…Now! the leggings thing… boy i kno they are NOT for me but trust me i saw someone weh day and i was able to tell her what was wrong with her outfit lol (me….fashion consultant on anything?!?!?!!? THANK U FOS! u have taught me well) :)

now…as for why i’d rock a Lubica dress.
1 THEY’RE HOT!!!. the colours, the cuts, the designs, they’re just classic.
    2. they’re definitely one of a kind and as simple as they are…they’re eyecatching.
    3. for me to like a dress u have to know it MUST be hot. i mean… seriously for anyone who knows me.. me liking a dress? UNHEARD OF!!!
    4. I’ve been looking @ Lubica’s pieces whether swimsuits or dresses and they are simply timeless.
    and
    5. i think it’d be a good change for me… a change to get in touch with my inner fashionista ( i know she’s in there somewhere burried beneath the jeans and t shirts lol)

    blessings!

  2. what ive learnt from FOS. how to take advantage of the recent trend on ‘buttoned-up chic’ for the workplace. work clothes used to just be collared shirts or suits w tanks and people getting creative with them. The blog on ‘what i wore to work today’ has definitely helped me to add more of my flavour to ma work day and helped me change a work suit into a career outfit :)

why i love Lubica dresses: theyre different from the regular dresses u see in the stores now. the texture of the fabrics she chooses gives off this effortless chic vibe- not too fussy, and not so casual as to be offensive. The colours are gorgeous and play into the design itself which only helps how the dress fits- it flows without looking like there is too mch fabric, and is flattering enough to conceal those areas u’d wanna cover up.
more than that tho- Lubica achieves feminine grace with her dresses by striking the balance between sexy but not trampy, and feminine w/o being girly, glam but cool at the same time. Definitely a ready-to wear line!!!

  3. I’m not even gonna attempt this one Irie Diva..these two ladies killed it, but I’m really feeling Jane’s “appreciation” of Lubrica’s Fashion. Almost like she stole my idea……go ladies GO!!!

  4. This is a hard one, with only two entries even!
    i’ll let the designer choose

  5. so did i win? :) or did bella take it?

  6. The designer’s been travelling Jane but I haven’t forgotten you! As soon as she gets back she’ll pick a winner and I’ll announce!

  7. I live in the states but I am recently becoming aware of carribeean style. Most of my style influence had been from what I see in New York but seeking something fresh and new, I came upon FOS and learned about Carribean fashion week and fell in love the looks, designers and models I saw. I would love a lubica dress because they are beautifully made the colors are hot and I instantly gravitated to them And I would love to rock a dress like hers on my first trip out of the country in my life to jamaica next year! P.S. My Jamaican boyfriend absolutely loved the dresses as well! I
