Spotlight on Couture: Marchesa

Mar 4th, 2009 | By Irie Diva | Category: Non-J'can Designers

The seasons are currently on display at the various fashion weeks around the world. Fashion designers wow us with their collections for spring and fall ready-to-wear and couture. Right now they’re in London I believe, showing off Fall Ready-to-Wear for 2009.

We all know the popular brands that put out ready-to-wear collections that we can actually wear and are more pocket friendly like maybe a Guess and a Gucci. For this fashion season I have picked one of my favourite collections from the runways to hightlight and broaden your label knowledge.

Directly from the Marchesa site:

British born Georgina and Keren met at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Georgina,
a 2001 graduate of the Wimbledon School of Art, began her career as a costume designer. Keren graduated from Brighton Art College in 2000 and subsequently focused on print and embroidery design. Georgina’s draping and design expertise paired with Keren’s textile creations resulted in a business partnership and the establishment of Marchesa in 2004.

Elegant eveningwear, inspired by vintage and Asian influences, defines the Marchesa Collection. The beautifully crafted designs fuse high fashion with an eclectic aesthetic. Co-founded by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, the company’s namesake and muse, Marchesa Luisa Casati, is the noted eccentric European style icon.

Based in London and New York, the Marchesa collection is presently available in Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman in the United States, Selfridges in London, and specialty boutiques such as Holt Renfrew in Canada, Elegance 2000 in Russia, Vakko in Turkey, Joyce Boutique in Hong Kong, and Villa Moda in both Kuwait and Bahrain.

About the muse :

A celebrity and femme fatale, the marchesa’s famous eccentricities dominated and delighted European society for nearly three decades. The beautiful and extravagant hostess to the Ballets Russes was something of a legend among her contemporaries. She astonished Venetian society by parading with a pair of leashed cheetahs and wearing live snakes as jewellery. Her numerous portraits were painted and sculpted by artists as various as Giovanni Boldini, Paolo Troubetzkoy, and Augustus John; many of them she paid for, as a wish to "commission her own immortality".

The Marchesa Fall 2009 Ready-To-Wear collection was presented in New York at the Chelsea Art Museum and it is one of my favourite collections presented this season. Going over the entire collection, you’ll see why. As you know by now I am a big fan of dramatic dresses and "frou frou" and this collection brought the drama!

The black sequined dress with tulle overlaying is heavenly…I am certainly in love with it and think it would be perfect for a glitzy black tie affair. Too bad I don’t go to many of those…

The draping on the lilac dress….sigh…isn’t it lovely? And I chose the other two because of the exquisite detailing on them. Just gorgeous.

Here’s a cutesy pantsuit for those who are not feeling all the frocks…cute top right?

These three are my FAVOURITE….Too much? Noooooooooooooooo they are just right! Maybe that last one is a bit much…you’d have to be real tall to pull it off. But I would certainly try!

The first one is I think would be absolutely fabulous as a wedding dress…I guess you may want to change the colour for that purpose…not me though, I love it as is. Don’t ask me where I’d wear the other two to….I’d certainly find an event worthy! You can view the entire collection along with others at Style.com
