Frenchman’s Cove took my breath away
My family took a vacation this August to visit some parts of the island that we rarely get a chance to see. I’ll have to break it up into several posts because it was SO awesome I really can’t fit it all into one post. First up was Frenchman’s Cove in beautiful Portland, Jamaica. I’ve been wanting to revisit Portland forever, specifically Frenchman’s Cove because the last time I went I was but a child and even though it was so long ago I have very fond memories there. My husband says he’s never been to that part of the island before! A little hard to even imagine but it made for the perfect spot for a little honeymoon if you will…even thought our little munchkin was along for the adventure.
So we said beforehand that we weren’t gonna rush it so looked for somewhere in Portland to stay over and whaddaya know, Frenchman’s cove has a resort right on hand.Too convenient to pass up. We wouldn’t have far to drive to get to the beach! We got there pretty late finishing up errands in the city so when we got there it already looked like this:
I was happy just to get there, lets say we took the scenic route and it was quite a drive. I think munchkin was happier as she went about jumping all over and stretching legs that were cramped up forever.
The room was…….adequate. I really liked the rock walls….and that was about it….If you visit the antiquated website they got up, well, any one of the two since it seems they abandoned one and created another which is just as defunct, you’ll see they’re selling you on the surrounding and not the room itself anyway. I call the websites abandoned because they tell you straight up that the rates you see there are not correct. Anyway the only thing available was a one bedroom villa. If you look on the first pic you’ll see our villa has a divide in the middle? Yeah the room is on one side and across the patio way there is the non-air conditioned living room and kitchen set-up. Needless to say we didn’t use that side much, save for keeping munchkin’s fruits and water cold.
Please don’t get me started on the bathroom that reminded me of a dorm room shared shower situation. I actually wore my flip-flops in the “sunken shower” stall.
GAG. The bathroom space itself was quite big. They could do a lot with the space. They really need to renovate. Whenever I visit Frenchman’s Cove again this “resort” will not be a part of my trip because the room was meh, the bathroom was icky and the breakfast was horrible. Plus they sell you on WIFI which doesn’t reach the rooms. Its only in the office area and on the beach. Do I wanna use my phone on the beach? Not so much!!! BUT. The beach?
Lets move on the the fabulous part of this all!!! It. Was. Breathtaking. I don’t even need to say a word. Take a look.

Check out the rest in the gallery below. Please don’t skip on it, the photos are absolutely gorgeous. Taken with my nifty new Canon courtesy of the hubby after munchkin’s last swim episode that canned my old Nikon. (You may need to click on photosets then the Frenchman’s Cove set, I dunno how to work this thing…)
The water was extremely cold. Munchkin was NOT pleased. She’s already not friendly with water that her feet’s not firmly planted in, I’m sure the cold didn’t help. I knew the river was gonna be cold. (There’s a river that ends on property and runs right into the beach at Frenchman’s Cove) But I didn’t think it would be any match for the Caribbean Sea so much so that the whole area would be freezing! It was so beautiful though that I can’t wait to go back with munchkin when she will be able to remember the whole ordeal. This shot upstream is one of my favourites.
After a day at the beach we decided to be adventurous and head out to get some dinner. Port Antonio is an extremely quiet town and we were outside the town so we decided to just hit the first spot we came across. That happened to be Woody’s Burgers! A kind old lady came out to us and told us that for dinner, rice and peas and chicken etc, we would have had to place an order well in advance but she will whip up some burgers for us. Hubby, not being a beef eater was not too pleased with the idea of a veggie patty but obliged.
Hubby bought me that dress all on his own, he’s got a bit of use eh
Anyway the burger was adequate….I think hubby got the surprise of the evening when his veggie patty turned out to be some type of calaloo and cheese mix instead of a wretched patty. The kind old lady did tell us she made everything from scratch. It was awesome. And her blended fresh fruit punch with a toops a rum was great too. My burger was just ok.
The following day we headed out to somerset Falls and sought out somewhere amazing for dinner, and we were not disappointed. Stay tuned for the Portland continuation!
