Celebrating Mother’s Day

Take the time to organize great Mother’s Day events!

Mother’s Day in Jamaica isn’t for a couple of months, but in the U.K., families are gearing up for their version of the holiday, Mothering Sunday. Dads and their kids are preparing crafts and buying flowers to give to Mom on the holiday, and many of the families in Jamaica are sure to fall under the same traditions once Mother’s Day rolls along.

Last year, the Jamaica Gleaner made the lives of many husbands and kids so much easier when it published a list of ways to make Mom feel special on Mother’s Day. This year, we encourage you to plan your Mother’s Day celebration together as a family and do something for the community.

The months before Mother’s Day serve as the perfect time to begin planning a recycling drive that culminates on the day itself. Every year, vast numbers of clothes and other recyclable, reusable items are discarded, while people elsewhere are left wearing clothes too small, too worn out, or too tattered. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to spread awareness of this plight that many women and children across the world face on a daily basis. In the U.K., Oxfam has teamed up with Marks & Spencer to create a recycling drive that encourages shoppers to donate used clothes. This Mother’s Day, you can do the same. In the months leading up to Mother’s Day, discuss the possibility of holding a recycling drive with your friends and family, complete with a program and special performances by your kids. Here are some ideas to make your drive all the more interesting:· Sell tickets to the event, with proceeds going to a charity of your choice
· Serve a simple lunch or dinner at the event
· Hold parlor games so the children enjoy the event as well
· Encourage the children of the families attending to write poems or letters to their moms, which they can read out loud during the eventThere’s a lot of preparation to be done for a Mother’s Day charity event, but it’s sure to be an excellent way to honor moms and help out the community at the same time.
