Edinburgh is a magical place to visit during the festive season. The Scottish capital has many family-friendly activities and events to enjoy that will get everyone into the Christmas spirit. From traditional Christmas markets to spectacular light shows, there are plenty of ways to make memories with the kids this Christmas in Edinburgh.

Christmas Markets

One of the best ways to soak up the festive atmosphere in Edinburgh is by visiting one of the city’s excellent Christmas markets. The most famous is the Edinburgh Christmas Market located in East Princes Street Gardens. This traditional German-style market has over 150 stalls selling Christmas gifts, decorations, food and drink. Kids will love browsing the stalls full of unique handmade crafts and treats like hot chocolate and sweet crepes. The market runs from mid-November through early January (except Christmas Day).

Another fantastic Christmas market is the European Market on George Street. Taking up residence on the elegant George Street, this market celebrates Christmas traditions from around Europe. Kids can sample Dutch pancakes, French crepes, and German sausages as they shop for handcrafted gifts and decorations at the stalls. The European Market is open from mid-November to Christmas Eve.

Both markets have a festive fun fair with rides and games that make them ideal for families.

Light Shows

Edinburgh puts on an incredible display of Christmas lights and projections each year. The light show at the Botanics is an amazing spectacle designed by an acclaimed light trail producers and a must-see in the festive calendar. You can book tickets online – entries are timed to ensure the attraction doesn’t get overcrowded. Some of the money raised goes to support the plant conservation work at the Botanics.

The Castle of Light show is also returning for a fifth year. There are immersive light displays after dark, interactive installations, and plenty to keep the kids entertained. Book tickets in advance and if you are fostering with Fosterplus Edinburgh, treat your foster children to a light show this year!

In addition to the organised light shows, many of the historic buildings around the city decorate their exteriors with lights and decorations. Take a wander around the Old Town and see how many pretty Christmas trees you can spot.

Pantomimes and Shows

No Christmas is complete without a trip to a festive pantomime or show. Edinburgh has some great family-friendly options. Catch Cinderella at the Festival Theatre this Christmas, featuring panto favourites Allan Stewart, Jordan Young, and Grant Stott. Adults and children alike will have a ball at the panto.

Christmas Carols

Go to the Christmas Eve carol service at the historic Greyfriars Kirk and embrace the true spirit of Christmas. There are two services this year, one on December 23 and the next on Christmas Eve at 5PM.

Have a Spooky Christmas

December is the perfect time to book a ghost tour. Visit the Vaults under South Bridge and see if you can spot any mischievous Christmas ghosts!
